MEET HARE AND DRUM!

PROFILE

Main Medium: Decoupage is an old technique of gluing paper onto objects, historically done with egg whites, now, with Mod Podge or similar glues. As simple as it seems, it can be extremely tricky.
Years at your craft: three

Most Inspired by:Paper designs! Entering a scrapbooking store or even a place selling napkins or wrapping paper (any paper can be used for decoupage) is like a hunt for me. I quietly walk among the shelves picking up paper sheets and piecing the design together in my mind. I take the wrong path many times in the process but then POW! I got it! The perfect, trophy paper is mine! What a feeling! Another source of inspiration for me is the nature of my home state, Montana. I live in the Bozeman area in southwest Montana, where breathtaking natural beauty is all around. I've made pieces featuring local birds and fish, as well as Yellowstone bison. Finally, I look for ideas in historical designs that inspired my medieval and victorian pieces. My Hare and Drum avatar itself is an illustration from a 1210 manuscript.

is an inspirational text that truly defined my life. It's long, so I'm including excerpts: "The greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing. To laugh is to risk appearing to be a fool. To weep is to risk appearing sentimental. [...] To place your ideas, your dreams before a crowd is to risk their loss. To love is to risk not being loved in return. To live is to risk dying. To hope is to risk disappointment. To try is to risk failure. But the person who risks nothing has nothing, knows nothing and is nothing. They may avoid suffering and sorrow but they cannot learn, feel, change, grow, love, or live. Chained by their certitudes, they are slaves: they have forfeited their freedom. Only a person whi risks is free."

Most Inspired by: Scents. Scents are important to us. Not only does it help us distinguish what our nose finds appealing or sour, but it also makes us remember. Now, I don't know about the rest of you..but I know that as soon as I smell a tomato at a local farmer's market, I'm instantly brought back to a time in my childhood when many Sunday afternoons would be spent picking Roma tomatoes by the bushel-full and bringing them home to score, boil, and can. Maybe you smell a tomato and think "ohgod I hate standing in line at the grocery store." But think...just stop for a moment and think of the smells you DO like---the ones that make you reminisce about good times with friends and family, or smells just like grandma used to (yeah, all grandmas have a certain smell it seems)..maybe the smell of sandalwood reminds you of a campfire. Or, perhaps, the aroma of creamy coconut brings up visions of your last tropical vacation. It's amazing what a certain scent can make you remember. And feel. Lemon zing makes you refreshed...peppermint; alert. Warm and spicy scents bring an aura of comfort. I love working with new scents. As soon as I get in a shipment of new fragrance oils I tear open the box and immediately open each one to get a full wiff of the essence of what I will be working with. And I write down what it reminds me of...how it makes me feel. It's from there I can take the next step: using it properly to invoke those same feelings and memories in you. I want to capture a moment of life in every single bar.

**********Etsy Spotlight Featured Seller Of The Month!**********

~~Teaman~~
~~~~~~~~~~~
"I was formerly warehouse manager for a huge tea supplier in Canada. I became involved in the hand blending process and at the time we had been selling 67 or so varieties which we distributed to multiple product lines throughout North America. Prior to that I drank tea occasionally, but had absolutely no understanding of what was involved with the importing and handblending of teas. Lets see, that was twelve years ago... Time flies.I am looking to expand now that my sales are beginning to pick up. I will soon be expanding my shop to include 15 flavors of tea in teabags and 9 flavors of loose tea. It takes large scale investments to import the tea leaves and most of the seasonings, fruit, etc. are also imported. I am looking at getting licenced in Michigan so I can be involved with the fairs, farmers markets, etc. I work alone, although I am still in contact with my former coworkers at the tea plant. I lived in Windsor, Ontario my whole life, but when I was married in 1996 I relocated to Michigan. At the time the economy was much stronger Stateside than in Canada, not so any more. I had always kept in touch with my former tea company owners and when I lost my job last year they asked me if I would be interested in pursuing a career in the tea business. I had always liked working for them, and the thought of doing it myself was quite appealing. With their connections I was introduced full throttle into the hand blending methods and put in touch with tea and spice importers. Mainly with the guidance of my former colleages, I was shown the proper blending techniques and how much of everything you need for proper flavoring.Right now this is all I am doing as far as work, and allows me also to take time with my two children. I am hoping that the sales will pick up with the colder weather and the coming of Christmas and everything as my products are great for gift baskets and such. I would love to be able to make a living at this. My former owner had started his business by selling spices out of his basement, so I am already one step ahead in that perspective. I am in need of advertising support so that is what I am pursuing right now.Right now I can honestly say that with the time spent and money invested, I am not really making much money from the sales. In fact I have been told by many that my prices are too low. I am trying to be fair in order to expand my client base, and believe me I am not looking to get rich off of this...yet! I have already had some repeat customers which is the best compliment to my products. The people I have been introduced to on Etsy are super, and I look forward to meeting more of them in the future."
